This is a How To tutorial for setting up an Attorney Internet Marketing SEO campaign.

attorney internet marketing seo

It doesn’t matter if your firm trying to get your site ranked at the top of Google for your target keyword + target city (i.e.) Sacramento Bankruptcy Attorney or if you’re a Plumber trying to accomplish the same thing (i.e.) get your site ranked at the top for Los Angeles Plumber, the same 6-step formula should be applied in both cases. Here’s the 6-steps you or your SEO consultant need to do.

  1. Conduct Your Keyword Research
  2. Conduct Competitive SEO Analysis
  3. 1,000 Word Article (Optimized KWs)
  4. Repair W3C Markup Errors (Red Alerts)
  5. Launch One-Way Link Building Program
  6. Track One-Way Link Progress (Rinse & Repeat)

Attorney Internet Marketing Keyword Research

There are dozens of keyword research tools to do this task. I use “Best-of-Class” tools. Namely, Google Keyword Tool, Market Samurai, Micro Niche Finder, Premium SEO (proprietary app). I start my keyword research via Google keyword tool. I’m looking for keywords with high for search counts that compliment my client’s niche markets. The goal is to find keywords with high search demand and filter this data for trends, CPC costs, competition and estimated traffic. I use phrase match vs. broad match. Once I find my high demand keywords, I enter the top 3 into my Premium SEO application.

The objective in this step is to identify where the competition is vulnerable. This helps me develop a strategy for getting your site ranked on page 1 of Google for your target keyword and target city.

This report highlights:

  • where the competition is strong
  • if their site is optimized (or not)
  • # of backlinks (since its inception)
  • # of backlinks (in the last 30 days)
  • the popularity of the links
  • keyword phrase density
  • phrase aggregate

and a few proprietary SEO metrics that reveals the critical path to a page 1 ranking.

1,000 Word Optimized Home Page Submission

We all know how important on-page optimization is to a website SEO appeal. It requires more than just tags, titles and keywords. Metrics like: total word count, keyword phrase density, aggregate density, internal linking and the average # of links per referring domain are elements in the Premium SEO formula. When the search engines crawl a site, the home page must have these elements in place to be fully optimized and for this SEO strategy to be effective. As a rule of thumb, when authoring say an Ezine article we use 300-500 words as a marker. When authoring your home page narrative we use 1,000 words as a target word count. Following this formula is how SEO Pros do their SEO.

Repair W3C markup validation errors

Google is all about user experience. It prides itself on its algo being able to serve up the top rated pages for a given keyword search phrase. Mobile devices and mobile searches are becoming more dominant these days. This is why site speed is becoming an important SEO metric. And this is why scanning your site via the W3C validation markup engine is needed. When the search engine crawls a site, if it gets bogged down trying to scan a site’s coding errors, it will simply exit the site and not index it. Our W3C experts are well equipped to find and fix these W3C coding errors. Depending on how corrupt the code is, the fee to scan and repair W3C coding errors runs $100-$300 per site.

Attorney Internet Marketing SEO Link Building

Link building is one of the most important factors in getting a piece of content (webpage, article, video) ranked at the top of a SERP like Google, Bing and Yahoo!

Building links is critical to promote your website. Done correctly, link building will increase the number of links pointing to your website, significantly improve your SE ranking and greatly increase traffic to your site. This translates to better search engine visibility and more importantly, more qualified leads for you to engage with. One of the critical aspects of a successful link building campaign is that it must be natural. In addition, the links should include appropriate alt-text (using the 2-3 target keywords) anchors. Avoid those SEO shops that do these tasks using automated software. It may take longer and cost more to do this manually, but the results are well worth the added time and expense, especially in managing our sites in a post-Panda and post-Penguin SEO world.

The Importance of One Way Links

One-way links are links to your website where you do not have to provide a link back to another website in exchange. One-way links or non-reciprocal links establish a more authoritative view of your website with the search engines, so long as you adhere to the Dos and Dont’s of one-way link building.

How Social Shares is Impacting SEO

It should come as no surprise that social media marketing should have a major role in your SEO strategy. Some experts predict social shares will rival if not replace conventional link building, although not in the immediate future. Still, it’s not a minute to soon to find out which social networks your prospects and customers participate and make sure you have a strong presence there as well. Look at this way. If a major person with 50,000 Facebook Fans or a guy with 1.3 million people in his Google+ Circles decides your article is the bomb and clicks your Google +1 Button so everyone in his social network will get an alert indicating you’re a credible source on topic “x” – this will greatly impact your SEO appeal on multiple levels.

As Social Shares become the New SEO, its more important than ever that you see and be seen on the social networks your Customers and Prospects are using. If you do this right, you can more quickly and effectively and efficiently engage your target audience with your (USP) unique selling proposition.

First things First
KnowEm

The first thing you need to do is identify which social networks you have an active profile. To get started, you need to find out where you already have a social profile. An easy way to do this is to visit KnowEm and enter in your real name or your brand / business name into their search bar. KnowEm will scan 350 social networks from all over the web and return to you a list of which social networks your name or brand contains an active profile with your name on it. Once you know where you have a social profile, you’ll want to enter your profile info into a spreadsheet so you can keep track of the details on each profile. This will help you develop a plan on where you will want to social shares

Social Shares is the New SEO

Once you know where you have an active social profile, your next step is to decide what types of content you intend to create and syndicate to your  social networks? There dozens of social networks to choose from. That’s one of the nice things about using KnowEm.  It shows you (by media type) where you have and don’t have an active profile. This quick 10 slide presentation will show you how to identify and obtain a social profile on the top tier social networks. The goal is to have a profile on the social networks where your prospects and customers are active. Doing this accomplished 2 things:
  1. You gain exposure to your target audience
  2. You acquire quality links to your website
The goal is to develop a following and a reputation for being an expert in your field. At the same time, you want to develop a strong sense of TRUST with you target audience. The number of Social Shares you receive by using this social media marketing plan will steadily grow over time as your audience regards your content as being high quality and useful in helping them acquire the information they need. This in turn will motivate them to engage you, visit your website and ultimately enter your sale funnel.

How Do Social Shares Improve SEO?

Danny Sullivan from Search Marketing recently posted an article detailing how and why social shares improve a site’s SEO. Another article that is a quite a bit more technical in nature on how social shares is the new SEO can be found on Mashable.

Lastly, you would be well served if you add the Author “iPullRank” to your Google+ SEO Circle. Mike’s guest post on SEOmoz is one of the best articles I’ve read to date on how social shares is impacting SEO.

Social Shares Plugin

As you can see from my Blog, I use a plugin to make it easy for my readers to share my content. The plugin is Slick Social Share and can be found here. There are many other WP plugins you can use to accomplish the same results. I like the way this one slides out and goes away if the reader clicks their mouse anywhere on the site.
Tracking Social Shares

Its important and easy to track your Social Shares. Its important because you want to confirm which social networks you prospects and clients are active on and you want to measure the effectiveness of the content you syndicate to the social networks. All you need to do is:

  1. Install Google Analytics on your WordPress site
  2. Closely track which social network gets the most action

social shares

Its pretty obvious from my Google Analytics dashboard — Twitter, Google +1 Button and ReTweets are generating the most social shares on my blog. The likely reason for this is that I have 20,000 Twitter followers and I send a lot of Tweets using the Buffer App. I have 1,500 people in my Google Plus Circles and post a lot of relevant content on Social and Local and Video SEO to my Google Plus Stream.

If you visit your  Klout page, you can see from the diagram below the metric Klout tracks on your Twitter and Google+ shares. This is an aggregate view only. You can’t tell where the person came from nor what page, article or digital content they liked?

 Klout Social Shares

Social Share Benefits & Summary

If you do a search for Social Shares becoming the New SEO, you will find a ton of articles and infographics and expert opinion that support the concept that social shares are in fact having a major influence on the SEO landscape. Now that Google has rolled out Google Plus SYW and has made is fairly easy for a website owner to add “Authorship” code to their site so when they create and syndicate content, their G+ avitar is connected to that entry, the more social shares you get from your visitors and readers, the better your pages will rank in the SERPs. The sooner you get your social shares plan in place, the sooner your website will produce the high rankings you seek.

This image links to my personal profile on Quora. I use my real name, Neil Ferree versus one of my websites because of the web 2.0 link wheel connection I am developing using my Google Plus personal page.

As I mentioned in a previous post and quite a few times on my Google Plus Stream, Social Shares and Social SEO are becoming a much more valuable and utilized SEO metric as far as Google is concerned. Quora is one of those social networks that you will want to add to your social media footprint.

One of the things you can do with the Quora social network is to use it to find trending and popular topics. Knowing what is the “most viewed” question on the Quora social network gives you insight into what people want to know about and hence, a topic you might want to follow and/or write about. Case in point.

Social Media Marketing Tip

If you haven’t done so already, get yourself set-up with a Quora account. Try and make sure your profile mirrors what you have on your Google Plus personal page. Ask questions, answer questions where you have domain expertise and engage your target audience. Doing this will help enhance your social prestige and reputation and that in turn will (over-time) improve and increase your social shares, which you may know is becoming more and more important in a Google SPY World.

Content Marketing is an umbrella term encompassing all marketing formats that involve the creation or sharing of content for the purpose of engaging current and potential consumer bases. For the past few months, I’ve been experimenting with a variety of content marketing tools, apps and processes to identify and curate quality content, syndicate this content to my social network and automate the process using various tools, both free and paid versions.

This video highlights the tools and concepts I will be exploring in the article. In the near future, I will show you how I use each content marketing tool in my day-to-day marketing effort as it applies to my blogging activity, servicing my clients and engaging my social media marketing network.

In this article, I’m going to share with you a few of my favorite content marketing tools, applications and techniques that I’ve incorporated into my daily and weekly content marketing routine. They include:

•    PostRank
•    Visibli
•    Pinterest
•    Buffer
•    Scoop.it
•    Google Plus
•    PostRank

What is Content Marketing an why should you care?

It’s too early to call, but in some circles, it’s said that social is becoming the new SEO.

If this theory holds, it’s not a minute to soon for you to plan, develop and deploy a new content marketing and social sharing strategy. In this article, I’m going to share with you my approach to content marketing and social sharing using a new content marketing strategy and the tools and techniques I use to deploy this new methodology.

Finding good quality content is key so we don’t spend half our day doing it. At the core of this new content marketing is Google Reader. My advice is get to know the new Google Reader ASAP. It will help you find great content that is worth sharing.

Your Friends, Fans, Followers, Readers and Customers will thank you for it. Granted, there’s more than one way to skin this content marketing and syndication challenge and this model is by no means the end-all, but I can tell you, if you follow this model, you’ll save yourself a lot of time and generate a lot more traffic to your site!

The first content marketing tool I’ll cover is called PostRank.

PostRank

PostRank delivers objective, real-time data and analysis on any topic, trend, or interest relevant to you or your business. PostRank was acquired by Google in June 2011, so you know the algorithm is robust, stable and provides an quality accurate scoring of the content. I’ve been using PostRank since July 2011 and I can report the algorithm delivers on its promise (i.e.) assigns an accurate quality score to a specific piece of digital content (Blog post article).

postrank content marketng

How to use PostRank for Content Marketing

First off, you’ll want to visit the Chrome store and install the PostRank extension into your Chrome browser. Over the years, I have subscribed to dozens of Blogs that speak to the issues I need to keep abreast of in order to stay ahead of the learning curve in SEO, Local SEO, WordPress, Social Media, Content Marketing, etc.

I have somewhere between 15-20 top tier RSS Feeds in each of my Google Reader Folders. You should do the same. I found a great way to find “best of class” Blogs in each of my niche markets. If you need help on this, let me know and I’ll share with you the tools and techniques I used to find these great Blogs. [Hint] Visit Junta42.com

PostRank

Let’s assume you have a nice roster of Blogs in each of your RSS Folders. All you need to do is — open Google Reader and visit each RSS Folder. The PostRank extension will present you with a color coded score on each of the entries in each RSS Feed. I just scan the headlines of the best (5.4+) scored entries scan the headlines that catch my eye and that I think my audience will find useful. Now all I have to do, is scroll down to the bottom of the article and click the G+ share icon and post it to my G+ Stream.

So in a matter of 2-3 minutes, I’ve identified a great piece of content and shared it on my G+ Stream. I’ve decided G+ will become the de facto standard for social sharing and networking, so this is where the majority of my social shares will be syndicated moving forward. You can do the same thing with Twitter, Buffer, Ping.fm or any of a dozen other web enabled other apps. The point is, you want to ID great content and syndicate that content with people that will find your social share useful. This is one of the most effective ways I know to build a reputation as an expert in your field.

Visibli Engagement Toolbar in Content Marketing

Visibli’s Content Optimization platform categorizes your content by topic and format, and provides an actionable scorecard to increase engagement.

Visibli Content marketing Toolbar

I like using the Visibli Engagement Toolbar because it lets me extend the reach of my social shares. There are dozens of elements you can add to your toolbar. I’ve been using my main web 2.0 properties (Google Plus, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, and Pinterest).

As you saw in the video above, as you share quality content marketing messages with your audience, you will find they will share your content with their fans, followers and friends, and in many instances, they will ReTweet it, watch your video (if you link a YouTube video to your toolbar) or visit one of your web 2.0 social networks and over-time, you will become an esteemed expert in your field.

I have not upgraded to the Visibli Enterprise edition, so the data in my Analytic Dashboard are limited. Still, I am able to see which if my top 10 pages get the most clicks and re-shares. This helps me gauge where to add more focus and where to scale back on less appealing content I’ve authored over time.

Pinterest Visual Bookmarks

Pinterest lets you organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and organize their favorite recipes. Best of all, you can browse pinboards created by other people. Browsing pinboards is a fun way to discover new things and get inspiration from people who share your interests.

Follow Me on Pinterest

Pinterest popularity has sky rocketed in the past few months. Pinterest has 3.24 million unique visitors per month (Compete.com, December 2011). The big tech blogs (Mashable, TechCrunch etc.) have tagged Pinterest as one of the Top 10 social networks for 2011, and for good reason. Their growth and usage numbers are “off the charts”.

Pinterest and Content Marketing

While Pinterest is ideal for Photographers sharing wedding photos, even us guys in the SEO space can share content that non-techs find interesting and useful. I will say that for those who are tech oriented, it helps if your PIN is presented in a visual format. Infographics work well for this. It’s smart to plan out the Pinterest Boards and Pins you intend to share in your content marketing. Here’s My Pinterest Board.

Pinterest Profile

I see a lot people on Pinterest that haven’t taken the time to fill-out any info on their profile. Don’t make this mistake. Make sure you fill-out a complete profile description and include the full URL to your other  social networks. Here’s why. When you add a new Board or a new Pin to a Board and someone likes it, or repins it, Pinterest will automatically add the link to the page where that image or video came from. This is a great way to acquire links to your site, increase traffic to your site and increase the number of people in your target audience to start following you on Pinterest and your other social networks.

Pinterest Etiquette
As with any social network, there are some basic rules of engagement you should know and follow. Here’s the “rules of engagement for Pinterest.

Most Popular on Pinterest

The Pinterest Top page has five (5) headings

•    Everything
•    Videos
•    Popular
•    Gifts
•    Pinners You Follow

One way to find quality content marketing material is to scan the Popular feed. It’s fast and easy to leave a quick note on a Pin. That simple 10 second action will increase the # of Pinners who circle back to look at your board (and your website) and if your Pins are in sync with their tastes, they will start following you. This is not at all like the cheesy way people use Twitter spammy messages. It’s much more social and much more cool.

The Buffer App

Twitter made some major upgrades to their platform in 2011. By now we all know, the number of followers you on Twitter is less important than WHO you have following and reading your Tweets.

Buffer content marketing

The Buffer App is an ideal app for content curation and content marketing. For now, you can sync your Buffer creds to Twitter and Facebook. And like you saw in the video above, you can schedule Tweets. The Analytics Dashboard data shows you how many times your Tweet got Clicked, ReTweeted, Mentioned and Favorited. For each account you have in your Buffer Dashboard.

I realize Hootsuite and Tweetdeck do some of these actions too, but nearly as easy or as fast. And with the Buffer extension added to Chrome or Firefox, can curate quality content and syndicate that Tweet in a snap! This alone, makes the Buffer App a must-have social media content marketing tool for my money. [Note] I am going to do a video on each of these content marketing and syndication tools in real-time, using my live accounts so you can see 1st-hand how fast and easy and efficient this model works.

Scoop.it Content Curation

Scoop.it is a powerful, easy to use content curation portal. With an Alexa is 2,396 and a Pagerank of 6, Scoop.it is one of the top tier content curation site on the Internet. With Scoop.it, you can quickly curate quality content and with a couple of mouse clicks, syndicate your content to a host of main stream web 2.0 properties (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, WordPress, Tumblr)

Scoop.it

I’m to a big fan of their curation engine, that recommends content to add to my panel, since it renders a lot of Twitter junk and other non-filtered content. But what I do like, is how fast and easy I can grab a URL from one of the RSS Feeds I track in Google Reader, or a killer post in my G+ Stream or any site I visit that has a great message I know my target audience will find useful. And let’s face it, there’s so much junk out there, that when you send someone a piece of information that helps them in their business, they will remember you for it.

I set up my notifications so that when someone re-scoops one of my entries, I can thank them and follow them and begin to build a relationship with them. This simple formula is very effective. The Scoop.it Community Dashboard ranked the Scoop.it topics by # of views. I have 4 topics so far, and about 4,000 views since its official launch in Sept. 2011. Scoop.it regularly ranks as one of the top 5 referral sources of my WordPress traffic.

Google Plus

I saved the best for last. I predict Google Plus will become the #1 social network for professionals. Google owns over 70 of search and everything starts with search. Local search, mobile search and content search. Since its launch, I’ve been testing #hashtags, keywords, images and real-time SEO. The short version is, Google is integrating all of its ancillary tools into this massive platform.

Google Plus Personal Page Neil Ferree

Search Google Plus for keyword phrase “local search marketing” then hit best of and notice what posts come up at the top of the results. That’s where you want your content to show up. Fortunately, I’ve been able to get my posts ranked at the top of the best of on Google Plus these targeted keyword phrases.

#LocalSearch
#ContentCuration
#VideoMarketing
#LocalSearchMarketing
#WordPressWebsites

The more keywords I get ranked at the top of the Google Plus search results, the more views my content marketing messages will get and the more traffic I will drive to my website. This is what you want to do too! Get yourself a Google Plus Personal Page and a Google Plus Business Page. To date, I only have 900 Plussers in my circles. But I’ve handpicked 99% of them versus simply adding people like I did with my Twitter account where I have 20,000 Followers. Who can track with 20,000 people and more importantly |who want too?

Google Plus Business Page

Summary

Content Marketing will be a huge metric in 2012. Having a strategy on how to identify and acquire and syndicate your content is key. Hopefully, this overly extended article got you thinking about how you will tackle this issue moving forward. As I said earlier, I will be doing a video on each of the content marketing tools mentioned in this piece, so as to show you how fast and easy content marketing can be done if you use good tools and a well tuned process.

Why install the Geo-Press Plug-in? There are a few very good reasons why you want to install  and use the Geo-Press Plug-in on your WordPress website.

The Geo-Press Plug-in is fast, efficient, complete and it works.

What the Geo-Press Plug-in Does

  1. It will create a geo sitemap and save it to the root directory and ping Google to let them know about the new sitemap.
  2. It will create a locations.kml (Keyhole Markup Language) and it’s what Google Places, Google Maps and Google Earth use to create markers for the map).
  3. It will create a properly formatted hCard for use on the sites sidebar.

geo press plugin

Geo-Press Plug-in Configuration & Benefits

  1. For “Longitude and Latitude” simply click the “Lookup” button after you enter the address and the longitude and latitude will automatically be filled in.
  2. Description – The description part of the “Location” is the part used as the description for the map marker in Google Places, Google Earth and Google Maps. Although it’s not necessary you can use some basic HTML in this area.
  3. After all information is entered into the form, simply click “Add Location” to save the location to the database.
  4. Repeat the steps above until all locations are entered.
  5. Once all the locations have been entered, you should see them listed under the “Current Locations” area of the plugin.
  6. Once all locations are entered, fill-out KML Description and KLM Author fields
  7. Click “Generate Geo Sitemap” doing this will accomplish 3 things:
    1. Create Geo Sitemap and save to the root folder of the site.
    2. Create KML locations file and save it to the root folder of the site.
    3. Ping Google to let them know about the new sitemap. (Note: It’s ALWAYS a good idea to manually enter the sitemap into your Google Webmaster Tools area. The name of the file is: geositemap.xml)
  8. The “Download Geo Sitemap” button at the bottom of the page is used to get a copy of the sitemap to upload to other sites
    1. Right click over the button and choose “Save Link As” to get the sitemap.

Geo-Press plug-in and KML Files

KML files, or Keyword Markup language files, is a file format used to display geographic data in an Earth browser such as Google Maps, and Google Maps for mobile. KML uses a tag-based structure with nested elements and attributes and based on the XML standard. This format was created by Keyhole, a company acquire by Google in 2004.

So, this is the location based XML mark-up language that Google Earth, Google Maps and Google Places use to format geographical data so the Googlebot understands it.

Here’s an example of a KML file from Google itself:

geo-press plug-in kml file

The structure of this file breaks down as follows:

An XML header. This is the line 1 in every KML file. No spaces or other characters can appear before this line.

  • A KML namespace declaration. This is line 2 in every KML 2.2 file
  • A Placemark object that contains the following elements:
    • A name that is used as the label for the Placemark
    • A description that appears in the “balloon” attache to the Placemark

If you know how to write code, anyone can build KML files and Hcard formatted addresses. For those what are proficient in coding simple mark-up such as the above, then you do not need this WordPress plug-in. However, watch this video Darren Jackson made on how to install, configure and deploy Geo-Press Plug-in so you will know what is entailed in doing this thing right.

Who needs the Geo-Press Plug-in

Anyone doing Local SEO and Google Places optimization who wants to simplify the creation of the location-based XML files and Hcard formatted addresses. Anyone who runs their site on WordPress and wants their Google Places Listing to get Ranked in the 7-Pack in Google Places

Geo-Press Plug-in Summary

Now that you understand the value of the Geo-Press Premium WordPress plug-in, you basically have 3 options to consider:

  1. DIY KML file coding (and good luck with that)
  2. Hire Me to do it for you (much better choice)
  3. Do Nothing (an option, but not a good one)

If you would like me to install the Geo-Press Plug-in on your WordPress website and configure it so that your Google Places listing ranks in the 7-Pack for your target keyword and target City;
