Keyword Research

How well you perform your Keyword Research will have major impact on how well your blog post will get indexed and ranked by the search engine bots and the free organic traffic that comes with a well structured blog post. If you’ve been here before, then you already know that my tool of choice for doing keyword research is Market Samurai. Having the right keyword phrase in your title, tags and description of your post, will ensure the search engine bots will rate your article well for on-page optimization.

Keyword Density

Once you have identified the target “longtail” keyword phrase you want to get ranked for, your On-Page Optimization score will be consistent with SEO best practices if you maintain a 2 to 4% keyword density in the blog post. So I don’t have to count the total number of words in blog post, I use a WordPress Plug-in called SEOPressor.

This handy tool automatically scores each article I write and tells me if I have maintained the necessary 2 to 4% keyword density. If you don’t have SEOPressor another trick or rough formula you can use would be to make sure your target keyword phrase shows up once in every 100 words with the article.

Its common knowledge that Google indexes and ranks WordPress blogs quickly. Another reason many of us publish on the WordPress platform is that there are many powerful and affordable plug-ins that help with on-page optimization and SEO structure. Ask around and you will find that many professional bloggers use the All-in-One SEO plug-in. For my content to have the best on-page optimization possible, I wouldn’t even think about hitting the publish button without having this plug-in working for me. The good news is, this is a free plug-in.

On-Page Optimization SEO Part 1

Make sure to use the Alt=Text on all of the images you use in your blog post articles so the search engines can recognize and index your images. These are the tags that tell what a .gif or .jpg is. Adding ALT (Alternative) descriptions to your IMG tags is quick and easy. You don’t have to do any complex HTML coding.

An example of a ALT tag looks like this:

<img src=”smm.jpg” width=”100″ height=”78″ Alt=”social-media-marketing”>

If you use images in your Web pages, its good practice to include Alt text for every image that a visitor to your site will see. ALT tags that include your target keywords can be used to boost your keyword frequency and help you achieve better rankings. Use this technique to ensure your on-page optimization is well structured.

On-Page Optimization SEO Part 2

H1,H2, H3 Tags

Make sure you code your target keyword phrase with H1, H2 and H3 tags. This will tell the search engine bot that this keyword phrase is the major point of your article and therefore, index and rank your content based on these H1,2,3 tags.

Description

The WordPress SEO plugin will take care of your blog post article description. All you have to do is make sure you include your target keyword in the blog post article description. I will be adding a video (in a few days) to this piece that will show you how I use the WordPress SEO plugin to help me with my on-page optimization and SEO structure.

Links

You want to make your outbound links are “no-follow”. This is important because you want to avoid what some call “link bleeding”. This means if your site is a PR4 like my site is, then unless you include a no-follow on your external links, you are giving the lesser PR site link juice and decreasing the influence of your site. So the rule here is to use no-follow on external links UNLESS the site has a better page rank than your site does.
